Comments: I am curious about any maintenance problems associated with live sand. IMO any substrate should be cleaned/vacummed to remove accumulated debris. Getting behind & under the live rock can be difficult and a nuisance. I prefer to use the berlin method. Sand stirrers ie:starfish crabs gobies don't work that well for a long term setup Of course it can be done however, IMO live sand is to provide adequate filtration nitrification & denitrification which will occur with using the proper amount of liverock 1.5 to 1.75 lbper gal. On the other hand if you prefer to use less rock you can make up for the lb per gall with the sand but it should be cleaned. It is easier to clean maintain rock than sand.If you need more specific info mail me

I would very much like to own a reef/marine tank but I realize the dedication it will take to keep it healthy. Also, I am trying to learn more before I dedicate myself. I currently have a 55 gal freshwater setup.

Comments: Hiya Robert, Thanks for the E-mail exchanges. My wannabe reef is 55US Gallons (about 50 actual gallons), 40lbs of Fiji live rock. Tank is still in cycle, holding off on water changes until tank cycles. Temp constant at 78, SG: 1.023, Am: 0.25, Ni: 2 or 3, Na: 50+ Plan on another 40lbs or so of live rock, and a skimmer. (Damn tough to decide on a make & model). Next thing to add are some hermit crabs and snails to take care of the damn algae! (and a little scrub, scrub, scrub..)

I found a message in a news group to which you responded that addressed a problem I have -- chronically fading coraline algae. Perhaps you'd be willing to elaborate? I have a (36x18x18)gal tank w/ 4x36" RO tubes on top, 2xTritons & 2xCoralife50/50. pH runs around 8.2,calcium around 430, DKH around 12. Other macro algae seems to grow just fine. Do *you* think we need more light, or would you recommend a different mix if tubes? (You reco'd 2/3 actinic blue & 1/3 actinic white in the message to which I referred -- but I've never heard of "actinic white. For budgetary reasons I want to stay away from high output and MH lighting, but I don't think I can squeeze another 36" double bulb fixture (I have 2 already) over the tank. What do you think?
