A review of Simplified Reefkeeping by Gary V. Deutschmann

Who Says You Can't Teach An Old Dog New Tricks? Gary V. Deutschmann

Thirty-Five years in the aquaria industry with some professional background in public aquaria and after several years in the aquarium rental/maintenance business, I have tested just about every approach to reefkeeping imaginable.

Many of the books available to reefkeepers today are just reiterations of known theories recompiled into yet another format and oftentimes written by manufacturers or their cohorts, touting their line of products, luring the unwary into buying a myriad of expensive and doubtfully useful devices.

The title Robert Metelsky chose for his new book "Simplified Reef Keeping" in no way does this comprehensive, money saving book justice. "The Reef Keepers Bible" would describe it much more accurately! Simplified Reef Keeping is the only book that completely takes any aquarist (beginner or master) step-by-step through the process of setting-up and maintaining a vibrant, well-balanced reef aquarium, that can prove to be no less than total perfection, a prized possession of the aquarist.

Robert Metelsky takes us back to the tried & true, proven, but oftentimes forgotten, simple basics, omitting all experimental methods. He clearly and graphically defines all the parameters and methods leading to a successful aquarium of any size or dimension, utilizing a novel, but factual approach to aquascaping that insures your aquarium will remain in a constant pristine state.

Simplified Reef Keeping uniquely covers all the tricks of the hobby, with numerous money saving tips throughout. The do-it-yourselfer will find a wealth of information, construction plans, required materials and the little keys to assembly & set-up, quite often overlooked until it's too late.

Robert Metelsky's expertise in proper lighting, efficient filtration and quality animal selection is superb.

Not only was this book enjoyable, easy to read and understand, it is very well illustrated, in depth, and has taught this old salt a thing or two!
