A review of Simplified Reefkeeping by Jon Moore

Everyone is always looking for the easiest and cheapest way to set up a reef tank. Many books are read and scoured to find one more tip to success. Wouldn’t it be nice to have all that information in one place without having to dig for it or be mislead with an infomercial to get you to buy Product X? A hobbyist who has been there, has taken the time to write a comprehensive book that explains everything needed to get started without making the same mistakes everyone seems to go through. Don’t get me wrong, this book isn’t just for the beginner, especially the “Do- It-Yourself” sections. I have been working on reef tanks for over seven years and found allot of great information I can still use on my system.

What can someone possibly offer new after all of the books that have been written on the subject: How about an easy to read format with the pitfall and money saving tips all along the way. The book Simplified Reef Keeping was written for the hobbyist! It starts out with the initial cost requirements and tank selection criteria, then moves on to lighting, water quality and filtration concepts. After you have an idea of what your in for, he explains the setup, maintenance procedures, covers everything from adding kalkwasser and algae control to feeding requirements and livestock care.

No doubt, in my opinion, the best part of the book is the “Do-It-Yourself” section. Robert has included complete details and materials on how to build a large tank. He continues on with plans and materials required for building a sump box, protein skimmer, denitrifier, wave maker, light canopy plus much more! The book winds down with some basic care and handling considerations for corals, invertebrates and fish. The last chapter covers some good advice on plumbing and available fittings. Simplified Reef Keeping would be an incredible benefit to any marine hobbyists library. The potential for saving you time and money is immeasurable. Its a nice change of pace to see something written with the hobbyist in mind.
