What's new in the Second Edition?

First a little bit of history about Simplified Reefkeeping.

Simplified Reefkeeping was first published September 1, 1996. The entire book was written without the author being online and therefore did not have any influence of the online reef community.
Once the book did go online, (January 1, 1997) it was offered to the more experienced online members for review. These reviews were posted on this site and feedback for improvements were solicited by the author. Many of the reviewers sent in comments via email and some simply marked there concerns in the book and returned it as it was a more comfortable method to relay their thoughts.
Most of these comments were considered by the author and included in the final revised edition that is now available.

Why has the Second Edition taken so long to complete?

When the book was originally written, the author did not have any outside influence. Once the book went online, the opinions and ideas of so many people were somewhat overwhelming and extremely difficult to surmise. Also, there were other reasons such as personal life changes, maintenance of the website, correspondence with readers via email, time and financial concerns. Overall it was simply overwhelming to redo or re write the entire book. Every time the project was started, there would be an un expected significant setback. However, there were subtle additions and improvements that were ear marked for the Second Edition.

So what's new in the Second Edition?

The entire book has been redone. At first glance it looks exactly the same but upon closer inspection the reader will notice.

  • The formatting of the book has been redone. Everything from font size to spacing has been changed in order to fit the most information within the 305 full size pages. There are  approximately 100 + new pages of information!
  • 95% of the images have been redone from black and white photographs to clear line drawings.
  • 95% of the "fluff" images were removed.
  • All of the input that was received within the 2 1/2 year period was considered and included where the author has seen fit.
  • Some of the authors original text was recanted and changed where applicable.
  • There have been two new chapters added.
  • Chapter 15 Questions & Answers lists most of the common questions the author has received within an approximate three year period.
  • Chapter 16 Tips And Techniques addressees many of the new shortcuts and money saving ideas. The results of the online web survey are included here to provide the reader with an overview of what many hobbyists are using, cost averages, lighting challenges etc.
  • There are several new DIY projects including. How to build a downdraft skimmer, how to make custom air woods, fabricating a Plexiglas overflow box, a poor mans chiller, building a column denitrifier, setting up a refugia and much more.
What has stayed the same?
  • The price. The cost of Simplified Reefkeeping has not changed from the first copy sold over three years ago. It still remains at $39.95 plus S&H
  • The money back guarantee has not changed. The reader still has two weeks to decide if the book meets their needs. We are proud to announce that there is less than one half of one percent return rate and that there has never been a problem with a return.
  • The simplicity. Although there have been several new reefkeeping techniques such as skimmerless tanks, magic mud, very deep sand beds and the like, Simplified Reefkeeping still focuses on directing the reader to the tried and true methods - personal methods -  that have worked very well for the author and his readers. The book avoids "keeping up with the Jones's", but rather guides the reader to a successful tank where they can then build their level of confidence and experience.
  • The money saving advise. One of the primary concerns of SRK has always been addressing the very significant cost associated with reefkeeping. The reader will find page after page of money saving tips whether it be actual products to purchase, the do it yourself plans, or by smart planning that insures overall, long term cost saving.
  • The authors commitment to his readers. The  internet has put the reader and author together, separated only  by an email. Questions from readers are usually answered the same day. All questions from readers are answered in a timely manner
What's in the future?
  • Plans to expand and improve the Reefkeepers survey is eminent. Hobbyists are encouraged to participate
  • The entire website will be updated to become a continuous resource for the reef hobbyists.
