I am wanting to convert a fish only tank to a reef tank.

I saw your faq on reef sand. I am wanting to convert a fish only tank to a reef tank. I have about 50 pounds of Carib Sea reef sand in my tank, part # 00050 sea floor sp. reef sand. I was wondering if this is to course to add live sand to seed the existing sand. I would like to keep as close to natural looking substrate that I can. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not sure how coarse 00050 is... although I this aesthetically it would be fine, live sand is fairly coarse. Weather it would match side by side.. I cant say, however if you were to add the live on top of the existing substrate, you would just end up covering it.

More of a concern would be if the fish only tank ever been treated with medications? I'd venture a guess that it has so that's something to think about. Medications particularly copper to treat ich would have an extremely negative affect on a reef aquarium.
