Questions about the design of the sump.

I have just received your book "Simplified Reef Keeping" and am reading it with great anticipation of setting up and maintaining my first reef system. The main tank is 90 gallons and am planning on building most of the equipment in order to save and re direct funds toward reef contents. Since I have never build a sump filter system, I am unsure whether I have missed something or not.

If you have the time, could you take a look at the attached picture and let me know if I've missed anything? It seems overly simplified and I feel as though I'm missing something.

Your time and assistance are greatly appreciated.

Looks like you have a good idea, I've made some changes to your diag and am returning it to you.My changes are made in Blue

The "clean" and "dirty" is always confusion although when you look at the image you'll see what needs to be done

The only concern is that the tank/sump looks like its divided into 1/3 and the smaller third is feeding the skimmer.

Ideally you would want to balance it or at least be sure that the return pump to the tank would not drain the clean side.

Other than that It looks good, have a look at the changes I made and possibly re read fabricating components 158 forward it may help drive home the idea of the clean and dirty side.

Also you can include a refugia in the dirty side of the tank/sump.

Looks like your on your way. If I can be if any help feel free to write, also if you would like to document your project I can place it on your own web page.

After reading the section you recommended, for the third time, I think I finally understand the basic concept of the sump. Could you take a look at the attached image one more time to see if this will work?

I have already started documenting my reef project for a web site and would be happy to send you some photos and a description (or the link to the website). So far, the stand is completed, the side cabinet (for the skimmer) is under construction as is the light hood and sump.

Your assistance is greatly appreciated. Thank you for being an accessible resource for new reef keepers.

Is 2 - 3 inches deep enough for the drip tray? Or does it need to be deeper to handle the volume of water that will be passing through it; 540 - 900 GPH ( 90 gallon * 6-10/hr)

Yes, its looks and sounds like you have it. Some other things to think about Im not sure if your drawing i precisely to scale but you want to be careful about allowing enough space/area for the drip plate. If its too small (surface wise) it may fill up with water. A larger area will allow more air/water contact which is very desirable and will happen automatically but ensuring a fairly large drip plate.

A general rule of thumb is if the box/sump is square then allow at least 1/2 for the drip plate.

If its a rectangle box then use around 1/3 for the drip plate

Also it looks (from the drawing ) that the middle separator is a little high. There is no hard and fast rule, and some water may overflow the baffle as needed but in general it looks like it should be about 1 1/2" below your filter pad area or overall 2 - 3 inches shorter than it is rite now.

So in summary

It looks in good proportion 1/2 and 1/2 the drip plate should take up 1/3 of the surface judge how high your center baffle needs to be.
